Animal families come in all shapes and sizes. Lots of animals don’t even know their parents, like sea turtles that hatch on the beach long after their parents have headed back to sea. Other animals, though, have families a lot like ours. Swans are animals with close family bonds. They mate for life, and the parents are highly protective of their young, called cygnets. If you come across a swan in the wild, it’s often a good idea to keep your distance—if its nest is nearby, the swan might attack!
